Default O/clocking mobility Help

Yo! I have been trying to OC my new mobility radeon 2600HD using tray tools (my old favorite) and powerstrip without much success so far

This card actually performs really quite well with stock settings and I am overall very pleased with it (i will post some stats eventually on my original Which?? thread) but i cant help but feel that I might still be able to get extra power out of it - mainly because the the default clocks are set ridiculously low - 500 core / 400 mem

(I have so far managed to get to around 600 core / 600 mem but performance seems to drop a little way above stock settings rather than increasing so at present the best performance I can get is only at default clocks)

Have other people managed to successfully O/C one of these cards? - what kind of speeds have you managed to get?

Does anyone else have anymore hints/tips /pointers regarding this?? Any helpful contributions are most welcome.

P.S What about BIOS flashing - a good idea? - y/n

ANY mobility card should NEVER be overclocked! Why do you want to do it? A laptop was never created for super duper extreme GTX extra OMG! cyber frame rates anyways.

Well, the answer is "because i could" ... I understand that a laptop like mine wasn't made for pure gaming but I thought because the stock clocks were so low that there should definately be some room for increasing the cards potential, but I didn't know that "you should never o/c a mobility card". Why? Whats the big difference between a mobility card and desktop card? - they both have pci express bus...?

The main reason I ended up getting a mobility 2600HD was because of my budget, If i had more cash I would probably have got a 8600/8700 GT as I wanted a mid-range laptop that I could play most games on with my budget (not play all games as with a top spec 8800 card etc though of course if i could afford it i would love a laptop with 8800 card in it!) ,and I can play most games, but obviously as a gaming enthusiast I want to maximise my laptop's potential wherever possible.

It's a Toshiba satellite P200 series - Core Duo T7250, 2GB RAM, 250 GB, 17"

Mobility chips are usually modified for lower power consumption --> less overclocking. Also why would you want to overclock a devices which probably has near-nonexistant airflow?

Ah - I see, I didn't know that but I guess what you're saying does make sense.

The fans inside my laptop work pretty well (also 2600HD is is made on 65nm which means its fairly cool anyway)

I just can't can't help but feel that there is still some potential performance gains to be had with this card (especially with memory clock being set at 400mhz) but maybe that's just me wishing...!?

Yeah I guess so. Just to give you an idea, I have an HD2600pro with sotck cooler inside a case with good airflow, the clocks are gpu 600mhz and mem 500mhz and temps are like 47 idle and around 58 in load.

Well so far as i seen the mobility components was really crappy for overclocking... so don't try... it's just at your risks...

Atleast it isn't intel graphics. You'd be lucky to get tetris running smoothly with that little pos.

Hmm, this is good information & it makes me think that there is a chance at least I might be able to take the memory clock up from 400mhz to around the 500mhz mark. I think I will try but will most probably end up leaving the core clock alone tho. Let's see...

btw I appreciate ur input fellas

P.S Unix I can play Crysis well at 1440 x 900 (my max res) with medium settings but no AA, -its the only game I have tried so far where I can't enable AA at 4X (or enable it at all in this case) - and Crysis is certainly not Tetris! (it's *cough* a Far Cry from Tetris!!

- My goal is to enable AA @ high res with resonable framerates on Crysis! -and the (ge) force isn't with me at present so wish me luck!

About the memory... don't try... if it's shared memory do big crap... but dunno if it's shared memory or if it's onboard memory rofl...
