Default ccc profiles manager got clobbered

i finally broke down and installed ccc because none of the third party tools or drivers are ready to completely control this 3870. this is the first time i've used ccc in a couple years.

now that i'm using ccc, the core temp is down 10 degrees (running at 50c under full load with 60% fan, barely audible) and the fancy aa modes work now (which looks damn nice) and framerates are considerably higher in all games. ironically, rivatuner is the only thing that can control the fan at this point, (apparently the author of rivatuner has received more info than ray adams or wizzard, which seems a bit strange to me).

so anyway, the last thing i remember, i was experimenting with high clock speeds in the neighborhood of 860mhz core and 1300mhz ram and after a couple lock-ups, suddenly the profiles manger in catalyst control center no longer works. my profiles disappeared and it now says i have an 8500 card, whatever that is, and any action i take results in a super long, cryptic error report (that i can produce if you want to see it) but only in the profiles manager, the rest of ccc reports a 3870 and works fine.

after re-installing, un-installing, re-installing ccc and the same with a couple versions of the dotnet framework, and even a damned registry cleaner, no changes. only the profiles manager is fucked, everything else in ccc appears to work.

oh also the gpu recover doesn't appear to be working, even though i have the services enabled but who knows whether that really works or not when pushing clocks to the max.

has anybody had experience with this?

can it be fixed or do i just need a fresh xp install?

any help would be appreciated.

(also, for once it would be nice to not hear from the "ati haters club", unless you can actually contribute something positive)

That doesn't sound good at all can you still uninstall CCC and O/C effectively with Rivatuner ? I ran into an issue with my X1950 and CCC where it wouldn't go high enough to reach the clocks speeds I could reach with the S1 cooler so I didn't run it for long.

Let us know if the card works OK with other software because sometimes when a card is damaged from O/Cing it still works just won't O/C ...

nah, everything appears to be ok with the card, i don't think it's seen 70 degrees yet. i was just testing the top end and it crapped out a few times, it runs perfectly stable at 840mhz core 1240mhz mem with overdrive. i didn't experiment with rivatuner much for oc but it seemed to work too, just using it for the fan really, not much in there for ati cards. traytools and ati tool each have a ways to go yet before they recognize the card.

the only thing that ain't right is that profiles manager in CCC, otherwise it works wonderfully. it's more of an annoyance than anything. i'm just trying to avoid scrubbing that machine and putting windows on fresh because there is no apparent reason for it not to work. i prolly should anyway because it's actually been a couple years on this installation and the sys has seen a couple different gfx cards both nv and ati but i'm too tired, always tired...

the thing i thought was strange was that the rivatuner guy seems to be getting more info than the authors of the software that's dedicated to ati cards. seems like ati would want to help those dudes out but perhaps not...

man i can't believe what a visual improvement this is over the 1800, the colors are so vivid and the aa and af is super smooth...

Well thats good the card is fine and puzzling I thought removing the drivers and running a driver / registry cleaner would remove every trace of it for a fresh install. Although programs like Norton's do some funky stuff with the registry for licenses and stuff.

On Rivatuner the guys on Guru have always had a pretty good relationship with ATI as we have but your right they are right on top of the ATI stuff especially the newer cards.

On this CCC problem I don't understand why removing and reinstalling doesn't correct this issue

i theorize that it has something to do with that damned dotnet framework. once you install it, it never really goes away.

maybe one of the smart dudes here has a quick fix. it seems perhaps the profile manager database is screwed up but i really dono what to make of it...

here is about a forth of the insanely long error text:

Two quick questions ....

1) Does this just happen with the newest Cat 7.12 release ?

2) Does the fan control issue also occur when Rivatuner is uninstalled ?

Reason I ask is the fan control worked fine on CCC and Rivatuner when I had both installed on 7.11. This could be a bug in the drivers anyone else having a fan control issue with the Cat 7.12 or CCC probs like DOOMJESUS ?

i was thinking of trying 7.11 i haven't done it yet but i don't expect much to change. i mean, 7.12 worked before and suddenly it quit. as for the fan the only issue there is nothing can control it yet other than rivatuner. the bios settings allow it to run a bit hotter than i would like it to. i figure when that russian gets Rabit bios editor up to date i will just reprogram the bios, there just aren't many tools out there for these new cards yet but rivatuner is setting the fan at a fixed setting with no problem though i can't get the temp controlled settings to change, there doesn't appear to be a way to do that as of yet but it's not a big deal, 60% is plenty of fan for a full load and can't really hear it much.

so it's not really an issue of fan control, the only thing that's wrecked here is the profile manager in CCC, won't allow me to create a profile or nothin' and reports a radeon 8500.
everything else is satisfactory but if you can't save a profile you got to start all over every time you reboot the computer and can't make setting for games, etc, annoying, let me tell you what....

First if the fan control in the CCC doesn't work without Rivatuner installed on your HD3870 it is clearly a bug in the Cat 7.12 and should be reported to ATI.

On your issue it could be a corrupt file or a bug in this driver version that caused that or this issue. I would try the 7.11 release just to see ...

EDIT: Test your fan control in CCC as well with the 7.11

ah, ok, so you're telling me there is a fan control twidle in CCC as well?!, i ain't even seeing it buddy. i guess i better try 7.11 and see if it's in there or not...

i just got all the standard controls for displays, colors, vivo, 3d, overdrive and vpu recover.
and vpu recover doesn't appear to be working but i really have no way of knowing for sure....

Yes Bro I ran Cat 7.10rc4 and 7.11 with Rivatuner installed on my Sapphire X1950 pro and had fan control showing and operational in the CCC. If you used either program to change it the other would read the change same as with core and mem settings.

Unless CCC doesn't support fan control for your new card yet but I fell it should. Out for a bit will check on your results when I am back
