Default uninstall nvdia causes loss of mouse control!

I don't have mouse or keyboard control even in the login screen of the safe mode, though I know it's not a hardware problem because I can use the keyboard prior to the login screen in the case of safe mode and prior to Win XP SP2 OS loading in the case of regular boot. I've even tried switching PS/2 and USB mice to no avail.

It was because I picked to uninstall the latest nvidia driver and selected "all nvidia drivers". I didn't know that it would mess up the ASUS motherboard because it said "all nvidia drivers". I am really disappointed in myself and kicking myself and at a complete loss and praying to avoid an OS (and all application) reinstall.

Any thoughts/advise:

1. I know I should download the CHIPSET
drivers (and any other drivers?) from the link http://support.asus.com/download/dow...N-SLI%20Deluxe because it is likely that the uninstall of the nvidia drivers ("All nvidia drivers") messed up the motherboard.

2. But without access to mouse or keyboard at the login screen in safe mode or in windows (it does successfully boot normally into windows XP), how do I copy over the CHIPSET and LAN files?
Thank you in advance!

Do you have a PS/2 mouse/keyboard or are they USB?

Thank you for responding. I tried both PS/2 and USB mice. I know for a fact that I can't use the keyboard either in the safe mode login screen or within Windows XP (which loads fine) because the LEDs for caps lock or numlock don't work. I know it's not a hardware issue as I've not only tested other working keyboards and mice with the system, but the keyboard works fine before the OS loads i.e., in BIOS or when running Ultimate boot disk.

On further thinking:

1. Is there a way to set a previous restore point in XP without going into the OS (where the mouse and keyboard do not work)? I did set a restore point before uninstalling the *#*! nvidia drivers. My mistake, like I said before was to select "uninstall all nvdia drivers", not knowing this meant it would uninstall something the ASUS motherboard also needs.

2. Can I use e.g., Recovery Console (of which I’m no expert) to copy the appropriate files from ASUS
http://support.asus.com/download/dow...N-SLI%20Deluxe? If so, which files and to where on the c: drive should I copy?

3. If I choose, as a last resort, to use the system disk to "repair XP", does it necessarily give me back access to mouse and keyboard since it was something that the “All nvidia drivers” removed, possibly form the ASUS motherboard?

Pulling my hair out on this...! Please continue your help (and even emotional support ) - it's much appreciated.

I wouldn't be too hard on yourself we have all had something happen at one point like this and its like ... Why Me lol

You should be able to boot using your windows disk and install the drivers booting with cdrom support off the disk. On which files using NForce I am not sure Squall might know.

Funny thing is windows when you initially installed the OS recognized your keyboard and mouse and your chipset and must have been with generic windows drivers. If your NForce drivers have been removed shouldn't windows be prompting you when the OS boots up that new hardware has been detected ?

Doesn't seem right to me if you have keyboard control on boot go into your BIOS setup and try loading the factory defaults. See what that does.

You can also reset your BIOS there is a jumper for it on most Mobos. Either way if you don't have keyboard or mouse control and the drivers for your chipset have been removed ... windows should be throwing a fit that they are not there *shrugs*

Thanks MacDaddy. Yes, I can't install the NGO version if I can't get to use the mouse.

And yes, when I boot windows up normally, I see a window for "Found new hardware". But I don't have mouse or keyboard use, so I can't select it to proceed. (I noticed that before windows loads, I can press the caps lock or numlock and the keyboard LED lights, but after windows loads, pressing these keys don't light the keyboard LED anymore).

Doesn't booting with the windows disk only allow me access to reinstall or repair XP?

I'm thinking BartPE to load and try to copy files over e.g., system.sav? Or which chipset files? But at this point, I'm at the end of my expertise and am a danger to myself. So any hand holding would be much appreciated!

PS: How do I ask "Squall"?

Thanks again

On booting with the OS CD you should be able to boot to a DOS prompt with CD ROM support. Since you don't have your USB working by the sounds of it and can't use a flashdrive or ramstick (I use my MP3 player for transfering small files from machine to machine). You could try putting them on a CD or floppy if they fit and you have one.

Did you try loading the defaults in your BIOS ?

As for Squall pm him never know he might be able to help

Hold F8 as as the system moves from post screen to disk boot to access the Windows Boot options.

select
Use last working configuration.
or similar.

past that, you'll have to do a XP repair install to restore the system.

Yep, Thanks, I did try that too. Looks like it's "repair XP"...

After talking to Squall last night for a bit on MSN if what he suggested doesn't work you may have too. I am used to using VIA chipsets but he informed me NForce chipsets handle USB and other features differently than VIA. According to him the removal of those drivers on an NForce based chipset should not affect USB or the other controllers for your keyboard and mouse. Hope you get it sorted

Thank you so much for checking for me. I appreciate it. Guess I'll go ahead and repair XP then reinstall the NGO drivers once I gain access to the system again.
