I recently bought an ATI X1800 XT 512MB GPU (slightly used), and these are the problems: - Catalyst Control Center will not open (saw a similar thread about this, I'm still following the procedure that it suggested.
- Every time I install DirectX 9.0, it seems to be ineffective, and I took a Steam system performance test and it said that I was currently at DirectX v6.1...
- Every game I play seems to crash after some playing... I think this has to do with the DirectX problem.
Also, I am moderately advanced technologically, and will probably be able to give more details upon request. |

First of all, we're going to hope that this 'slightly used' video card wasn't abused by the previous owner. That is, we hope he/she didn't overclock this card to the extent that it caused some permanent damage. I mention this because some people will push cards to the outer limits just to get better benchmark scores. Once done, they'll put 'em up on Ebay to recover some losses.
Now, assuming the card is just fine:
1. For CCC to work, you have to at least have .NET Framework 2.0 installed from the Microsoft/Windows Updates. You don't mention specifically if you have or not.
2. You should go to Microsoft Downloads and get the latest DirectX for November 2007.
3. Make doubly sure you have the latest BIOS and motherboard/chipset drivers for your system installed.
Now, additionally, you don't mention what you had before you installed the X1800. What brand? Did you completely remove the previous drivers? If you replaced a video card of a different brand, you should at the very least do a Window Repair Installation in order to eliminate possible Registry conflicts.
Good luck!

1. I have .NET 2.0
2. I have the latest... (It's 9.0c, isn't it?)
3. Have em...
And that last part could be the problem... I had an integrated VIA '97 UniChrome Pro... It was the worst P.O.S. I have ever used in my life... And I just finished a Windows Repair Installation... I just don't remember which file had to be replaced (there was 1). |

That said, have you been able to completely disable that onboard video adapter in the BIOS? That's a very, very important step to take.

No BSOD though, and I followed the process in the stickied thread that talks about the stuttering and BSOD... and how to fix it... |

If so, check out which IRQ your new video card is assigned to, and, what other device/s may be on that same IRQ. If you can do so, Disable that other device to free up that IRQ to see if it helps any.
If that other device is a physical add in card installed in a PCI slot, move it one slot over if possible. Then refresh the IRQs to get things sorted out.

The card is a PCI Express, and it's in the only PCI Express slot in the computer...
And yeah, I did that... This card is the only one that is on that IRQ... |

What is the AMP rating on the +12V rail? If it's anything less than 25A, you'd be best off getting a better one pronto.

Also, I have to correct myself. It's not 300W, it's MAX is at 250, but the combined power is only 160... I think I'm gonna take the video card out until I get a new PSU.
