GPU: Radeon X1650Pro AGP
M/B: MSI Neo2 865PE
RAM: 512MB DDR

Default Cat 7.5 and up = massive performance drop

I originally upgraded to the 7.5 drivers with CP on my 9800pro and noticed a huge loss of performance, and have since discovered after trying the 7.7's on my new 1650pro the same loss applies to it, as well as a friend who also has a 1650.

If either he or I install the 7.4's everything runs insurmountably better... an example being the score in 3Dmark05.. 7.5+ gives me around 1670 points, and the 7.4's 3887.

What happened?

The newer drivers are mostly R600 centered. I don't think it's a good idea to use them with older hardware. Did you check if any of the AGP related settings have been forcibly altered by the driver? Maybe the fault was deliberately put in to "persuade" people that an upgrade is what they need.

Well that's strange :S i don't think amd can do the same than nvidia... Well here i noticed anything... i have better performances with the 7.9 than the 7.4.But i noticed after an long time if it's like 1 year you have wxp on your computer and each months you upgrade the drivers... sometimes it's does that so... i can suggest to you to reinstall your O/S

AGP should stick to 7.5.

I saw a massive increase in performance going from 7.6 to 7.8 and a minor increase going to 7.9, but AGP don't benefit, and in most cases lose performance going above 7.5.

Im running the 7.9's and havent noticed any performence loss at all with my agp x1950pro, i dont think its an issue of AGP or PCI-E but rather that the 1650 chip is a little older
