Default HDTV Problems?

Ok i have searched everywhere and cant find out how to fix this. I just recently hooked my tv up to my computer with a dvi to hdmi cable and i am now able to get 1920 by 1080i resolution but i have a probelm when i apply that resolution my screen is really bouncey. I thought it was the refresh rate but when i turn that up above 30 hertz it goes black and i have to wait for the count down to go away for my screen to come back. The Best i have been able to get without the jumping and bounceing is 720p but its off the screen i cant see certain things i have been reading about overscan but cant figure out how to change it or if its even my problem can someone please help me?
