I have used NOD32 with is far better than norton, also uses less resources and Avast is also great. Nod32 scanning of the whole drive is extremly fast.

clamwin it is free, open source and usually the first to release patches for new viruses, it doesn't do active scanning though, so best to have it and another. It uses next to no system resources though, and doesn't interfere with other av, I have it and avg on my windows pc's and just clam (the original linux version) on my linux pc's.

Default My Updated List (Everything in it is free by the way)

My completely free setup that has stuff to do with security:

CCleaner (Great cleaner. Can free up a lot of space and can erase history/cache and more.)
http://www.ccleaner.com/

Ad-Aware SE Personal
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Microsoft Antispyware
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...e/default.mspx

Spybot - Search & Destroy
http://www.spybot.info/

SpywareBlaster
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

IE-SPYAD (Adds many dangerous sites and domains to the restricted sites list in IE)
https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

SafeXP (Many options. Can disable many unused services and security issues)
http://www.theorica.net/safexp.htm

Windows XP SP2
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx

AutoPatcher (Will bring your computer up to date with many security updates, tweaks, and a lot more.)
http://www.autopatcher.com/

Windows OneCare Live (Adds Antivirus and a Firewall that actually blocks incoming and outbound connections. Much better than the SP2 firewall...)
http://www.windowsonecare.com/

Hostsman (Use this to mange your hostfile. The Hostfile can be used to block hostile websites/domains and banner ads. Hostsman is the best manager I have found it allows you to update and combine 4 good hosts files. They are hpHosts http://www.hosts-file.net/ MVPS Hosts http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm Mike's Host http://www.everythingisnt.com/hosts.html and Block Adverts http://remember.mine.nu/ I think it is easy to use and has the best features I have seen so far from a Hosts manger. Also take note that Antispyware applications may detect false spyware items when using the hosts file but it is okay.)
http://hostsman.abelhadigital.com/

PAC File (This is similar to the Hosts file but is more focued on blocking ads.)
http://www.schooner.com/~loverso/no-ads/

Blackhole Proxy (Hostsman has that HTTP Server but websites or ads that are blocked will still show error boxes. It also does not work with the PAC file. For this reason I use this Blackhole Proxy to place a transparent image so those ugly error boxes don't show up and the websites I go to look nice and banner ad free. Here is the liink to that clear (blank) image to be used with it. http://www.schooner.com/~loverso/no-...roxy.clear.gif I use this in conjuction with the Hosts file and the PAC file.)
http://s91363763.onlinehome.us/BlackHoleProxy/

The Hosts file and PAC file stuff may be a tad complicated and confusing by the way. Tell me if anyone needs some help with it.

Wow that was a lot.

I wouldn't know very much about this subject since I haven't had a virus in years. But if I were to make an educated guess about it, I would lean towards NOD32 (based on forum feedback and reviews posted throughout the Internet). However, if one would purchase a decent hardware-based firewall and used a program like Spywareblaster, I think most malware problems could be avoided with minimal memory/resource usage and less programs running in the background. Since I'm totally against programs running in the background or without my consent, I recommend this setup completely.

HOLY @#*(@! madscientist327, them thar's ALOT of anti virus/spy programs! I will definitely have to download a few of them
Currently, I use Ad-Aware SE Pro, Spybot, and Norton. I used to use AVG, which was free and very good, and then switched to NOD32, which worked very well... so I'm not so sure why I switched again to Norton when NOD32 worked just fine...?
