I really don't want to have to buy something as I won't be doing this often enough to warrant the cost. It's just for my mom's 80th Birthday Party and using 1920's era music. I found loads of MIDI files but need to convert them.

#2 | | Site Staff | First happy birthday to mom. Second, you don't need to buy anything, you can convert Midi to other filetypes with Winamp.
Go to Preferences > Plug-ins Input > Nullsoft MIDI Player > Configure > Change Device to DirectMusic / Microsoft Synthesizer (with output) > Ok.
Now go to Plug-ins Output > Select Nullsoft Disk Writer > Choose Configure > Put there your desired settings > Ok > Close Preferences and just play the desired Midi file.
While Winamp is recording, you won't hear any output in the speakers, make sure to switch back to Nullsoft DirectSound output after.

It's converting to WAV files ... which I believe I can work with just fine.

#4 | | Site Staff | You can also convert it to MP3, but make sure to install MP3 encoder such as LAME (it comes with K-Lite Codec Pack). |

I'm converting more MIDIs to MP3. But, for some reason the files are getting cut nearly in half as for the play time. Example: I have one MIDI that is 4 min, 32 sec. But, after conversion it's only 2:05. What's happening and how do I fix it?
Thanks!

It's also forcing me to choose LAME MP3 if that matters.

#9 | | Site Staff | There is another way of converting by choosing Stereo Mix as the recording device in the Sound Control Panel and 3rd party audio editing software such as Nero WaveEditor. |

No big fuss, no digging through preferences and settings. Downloaded it, installed it and, in less than 5 minutes had the first MIDI file converted to MP3 without any loss or corruption.
It's called, Switch Sound File Converter. It's totally free and is doing a large batch conversion as I'm typing this.
