#1 | | Stuck in "April 1st" | | M/B: Asus Rampage Formula | | | RAM: G.Skill 2x2GB PI Black | | Gothic 3 This game is not meant to be compared with the likes of oblivion but there's not much choice:
The AI is much better:
1)You actually see wolves hunting and killing a scavenger then settling down to eat it.
2)Blacksmiths take a hammer and work instead of standing there bellowing "BIG ORC WEAPONS FOR BIG WARRIOR" and never making anything as in oblivion.
3)Draw your weapon near guards/mercenaries and they will ask you to kindly sheath it or else they'll chop you and dance on your body singing various songs from the rock band the rolling stones
4)Generally people doing stuff, cooking, sleeping, sneezing, pissing (Funny if you try to talk to them while they're doing it they take ages to zip (They have zips in fantasy games?) back up
5)The reputation system and how it effects reactions.
They didn't make any fancy name like Radiant AI and yet it's miles better. The graphics were OK and the slightly weak skill management was improved.
What I didn't like was the americanifying [sic] of the combat system. The previous gothic titles had really hard combat systems and that was what made it feel so rewarding but in gothic 3: click click click click click (Headphone output: Slash! Argh! Slash! Argh!). What happened to dodging around, parrying and timing attacks? Whoever gets the first knockdown pretty much wins.
The quest log could use some improvement but a mighty RPGer like me is used to jotting down the occasion detail that the quest log omits.
The alchemy and magic system is not as extensive as oblivion but it's more realistic. You gotta have an empty bottle! Crushing some leavings with some meat does not create a ready bottled potion! You need to be at an alchemist's bench. Smithing is similar. Cooking recipes are included and fun in my opinion. The simplest thing you can cook is roast meat. You cook your raw meat over a fire on a stick and the health bonus you get from eating it increases. If you liked the previous series you will definitely like this one. Newcomers can probably get comfortable within 2 hours of playing. Well 2006 finally released something I genuinely liked and it fits like a perfectly sized shoe.

Just that even though Gothic 3 is an amazing RPG, just like NWN 2 it has some seriously performace problems..... Grr Major fan of NwN 2 and I used to play Gothic back in the day... But I was seriously dissapointed whn i pickd this one up b/c of the performace issues.. Sorry to say man Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion is still stealing hours away from my life for now (well just til I can get gothic 3 to run decent). :-) |

#3 | | Site Staff | I just tried Gothic 3 at some friend's place, and IT SUCKs and I'm totally agree with this review over here. The guy has super rig with SLI, and it's so SLOW! and the gfx is horrible, even on super-high. |
