i once had really laggy audio becoz the creative mp3 decoder had put itself in first position, putting it behind the microsoft decoders fixed it. | Would just uninstalling and reinstalling do it? Or, do I need to do the reinstall in a particular order?

Anyway, I tried something and actually got the game to play very nicely. What I did was install a new HD and install ONLY Windows XP Pro SP2 full version from my CD. Then I made sure that DirectX was updated as well as the motherboard drivers.
THEN, I only installed Oblivion and patched it with the official patch. I followed that up with installing the mods I'd been using and then transferred over the most recent saved games I had.
The game plays. Although the outdoors still takes a big hit in performance.
NOW...there's a NEW problem: Anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes into the game, I lose my keyboard/mouse!!! I've never encountered this problem on the previous 3 systems I've played on. When this happens, I can only CTRL-ALT-DEL out of the game and then End Task on the game and restart it. To add insult to injury, after experimenting with this new Windows installation and having some success, I decided to shutdown and reboot to the original Windows install and the dang keyboard/mouse problem has followed me.
There must be a demon in my PC....it's the only explanation that makes sense.

But, as I do NOT want to have to start the game all over again, I've been keeping all the mods and my saved games handy so that I can just continue whenever changing or upgrading my system. I did the same with Morrowind for over ... what was it?.....4-5 years??
Anyway, I found out that the kb/mouse problem is not all that uncommon. In fact, the patch is supposed to take care of it.
Believe it or not, I'm still finding new ruins and caves to explore and plunder...even after a full year of playing. I just definitely want to be ready when Shivering Isles is released.
