Its not NWN kind of RPG - is pretty linear - but the leveling and selecting skills make you want to believe its RPG (although if every one will probably complete the game with same amount of points in the skills) |
I still don't follow your logic at all. I've played NWN; Baldur's Gate; and others. Just because a game is developed with a Third Person view doesn't relegate it to some other genre of game.
Also this game is definitely NOT linear. How can you say that? There are so many side quests and "assignments" you can take on OR completely ignore. You can travel to various systems or not. Yes, in order to finish the game there are certain criteria you do have to complete. But, that's also true of other RPGs.
The first time through I finished it without doing 2/3 of the game. My skills and leveling were very minimal. On a second go through, I'm doing as much of the game as possible and my skills, leveling, weapon usage, and every thing else you can think of, is different...read that DIFFERENT....than it was on my first go through.
Mass Effect is an RPG....all the way.
Just to press the point further, every single review of the game when it came out lists it as "RPG". And, here's one review to consider:

Another Take
from Hilary Goldstein
Mass Effect is a fantastic game and one of my favorite RPGs I have ever played -- and I've played a lot of RPGs.
The role-playing aspects really are second to none. In fact, this is one of the rare games where it seemed as if I was truly playing a role and where I felt the impact of my decisions. Playing the role of a renegade is no easy task, because it brings some moments as jarring as the very best the TV show 24 has ever offered. You really do act as Jack Bauer in space. If only the combat, which is a significant part of Mass Effect, held up as strongly. As much as I'd like to look past the bugs and bad AI, it makes a significant impact. Some of the issues are simply unacceptable for a game of such high caliber, which has been in the cooker for a long time.
This is, however, an RPG first and a shooter second. So as long as you are coming for the role-playing experience, it should be easy enough to look past the problems with the combat system. Mass Effect is full of memorable characters and experiences. It's the best RPG available so far on 360.
