Default Dark Horizon - Wings Commander-like Space Sim

http://www.computerandvideogames.com....php?id=194670

"Paradox Interactive has released nine screenshots for space action combat sim Dark Horizon.

As we've suggested before, Dark Horizon looks like it follows in the footsteps of X-wing, TIE Fighter and Wing Commander.

These particular screens hint that it takes more inspiration from the latter than the former. Paradox promises the game will include some RPG elements too, several modes of combat and advanced ship customisation.

You'll also be able to play it with a joystick, so it might be time to go hunting through the cupboards and find that old PC stick you thought you'd never use again.

Dark Horizon will be available in shops and online as of September 26."

Keep RPG elements away. Wants proper space sim.

No such thing as a "proper space sim"... and it wouldn't be very much fun if it was!! Seriously! It's just like Flight Sims. You simply cannot "properly" simulate flying a plane on a personal computer. You can "simulate" reading your gauges, and making decisions about the correct way to interpret the instructions of your checklists. But sitting in front of your computer is NEVER, ever, going to be like piloting a real airplane. This same dilemma goes for Space Sims, but in spades.

I've never been to space! But I have flown both a private, and military, aircraft. And I have recieved training on a multi-million dollar flight simulator, and the (PC) Flight Trainers certified for pilot training. I've also owned, and played, every flight simulator sold! As a result, while I enjoy "flight sims", it's just a "game" I'm playing and it will never be the same as "flying".

This game is set in some fantasy universe. The technology they employ is most likely not going to be based on real technology. So I don't see a problem with adding in some RPG elements, and allowing one to customize their ship. Those are all "game" elements that most players will expect, despite the fact that you don't approve. Whenever I hear someone say they want a "real" simulation I can't help but wonder if they realize just what they're saying?

Specifically, you're asking for a "Tool" that will train you in the "proper operational procedure". And while that is accepted for one phase of a flight training program, it does not qualify one to "fly". Additionally, I don't think the "operational procedure" for Space Flight is going to be that engaging. So why should I pay for that experience? I'm not going to be able to fly a "space ship" in the near future. I don't think I even want to fly what we have which most closely fits that description. Hence my opening statement.

You do realize we're talking about games here. That's a bit too much don't you think? Of course I'm not referring to a space sim that simulates the real thing with all the procedures lol. What I meant (and you should have known) was a proper space sim game, no rpg baggage. Btw ship customization is hardly enough to classify as "some rpg elements". I'd like something in the spirit of Tie Fighter but you can't have that along with rpg features to distract you. (I'm an RPG fan btw)

Oh I do understand that we're talking about "games" here. And that there should be some "character development", along with the ship customization, is to be expected. Just because it is a game and the developers want to make it interesting as possible. What they should not be expected to do is work out a flight model that features Newtonian Physics that is faithful in every detail. Partially because we don't have any spaceships advanced enough to be used in this way, and also because their focus should be on making the game "fun" (which doesn't demand that it obey all the laws of physics as we know it!).
