I read the full article in the recent Game Informer magazine and have done more research online about it. Obsidian and Sega have teamed up to make an RPG/Shooter/Action game that puts the player in modern-day times as a CIA Agent disowned by the agency but must work alone to try to thwart a world catastrophe.
Granted, the game is not due to be released until Q1, 2009, but, some of the details and screenshots have already been posted.
As an RPG fan, the promise of this game really has me stoked!!
Check out the screenshots here and there. Here's one link....

"SEGA and Obsidian Entertainment are planning to release the upcoming role-playing game
Alpha Protocol in early 2009 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, the companies officially announced today.
News of the espionage-themed action RPG
trickled onto the Internet unofficially yesterday, and SEGA and Obsidian are now providing official info.
"Alpha Protocol blends Obsidian's knack for intricate story, engrossing characters, and significant character advancement with fast-paced modern combat," said Feargus Urquhart, CEO of Obsidian Entertainment. "Alpha Protocol embraces everything we enjoy about making RPGs from a fresh perspective. We are confident our talented staff at Obsidian will enable us to deliver this exciting RPG experience."
Obsidian's credits include Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords (a sequel to BioWare's original KOTOR) and Neverwinter Nights 2. Here's SEGA's description of how gamers will experience the Alpha Protocol world through the eyes of main character Michael Thorton:
Loyalty carries a price and no one knows this more than agent Michael Thorton. A talented young agent cast out by his government, Thorton is the only one with the information needed to stop an impending international catastrophe. To do so means he must cut himself off from the very people he is sworn to protect. As players determine how to accomplish different objectives, the decisions made and actions taken in each mission will ultimately transform the type of secret agent Michael Thorton will become. Every choice the player makes as Michael Thorton will carry consequences for his future and the fate of the world.
Internet posts quoting an upcoming issue of Game Informer magazine claim Alpha Protocol will be in third-person perspective; use a non-class-based skill system; and handle communication via a new "dialog stance system" that mixes elements of the Mass Effect dialog system with that of Indigo Prophecy."
