Default Some movies I watched lately

The Killing Room - 2009

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1119191/

Watched this one by pure chance, I was looking for some other movie, but ended with this one instead. It's futile to spend words about it as it's horrific. There are a few known faces (mostly from TV shows) appearing in this "movie" and that's the only positive thing I can say about it.

The plot is quite simple, you put some people in a room, some guy comes in, splatters the brains of one of them all over the floor and lets them know that only the last man standing is going to leave alive. Only by chance did the guy kill the only girl present in the room leaving four guys to fend for themselves. Oh, he also drops a gun with a single bullet, just to spice things up. Interesting notion? Maybe, but not in this production.

Don't worry, I won't ruin the ending for you, as I haven't managed to endure to the closing credits and just gave up. I skipped a few minutes ahead and have seen some body bags etc, but who even gives a damn.

I post this only as a warning - DO NOT WATCH.

Public Enemies - 2009

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1152836/

I'm a big fan of Johnny Depp, his performance in many moves (including but not limited to the everlasting Blow and Donnie Brasco) has left me astonished. I mean, his face alone makes even Pirates of the Caribbean watchable. Well, almost.

In this movie he takes up a role of John Dillinger himself and does a fine job portraying the gangster. The movie issues lie elsewhere, it's too long for it's content and gets boring at times with one too many repetitions of already been there/done that events. I mean, do they really need to rob like 7 banks in one movie? One or two would suffice. You see a few robberies, you hear about another few and instantly you get the feeling there was a lot of crime going on.

All in all, watchable and thanks to good ole Johnny somewhat enjoyable. Definitively a nice change of pace with it's 30es setting. The featured crime was quite brutal, but some camera angles did leave a lot to be desired, not often you see such technical faults in expensive productions.

Cloverfield - 2008

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1060277/

a.k.a. Godzilla visits NY.

One issue I always had with this type of movies - the military brings on heavy weapons (even though, one has to wonder how come they could spare only a tank of two when imminent threat is posing to demolish entire New York) enough to move a Mount Rushmore 6 feet to the left and yet they can't blast this big ass mofo out the way? Aha, you will say, but this isn't a standard monster. And indeed it isn't. Not only can it withstand a barrage of uranium enriched 152 mm shells and more then one napalm-or-whatever-it-was bombardments (what, not even a minor abrasion?!), it also has these little minions (apparently thousands of them) that jump off and then run amok, reeking havoc in their path, reaching all those areas city where the monster can't fit hit his nasty tentacles. Oh yes, the little things have this one extra ability, they can infect you with something so you become a monster yourself, something new to this type of city-sees-monster-monster-crushes-city films.

When you forget about logic, this is a perfectly OK movie. The acting is OK, there is the imminent sense of doom all throughout the end, there isn't a fekking happy ending... Even the semi documentary approach fits well, with "hand held" camera. A bit shaky, but gets the job done and you always have the sense something is going on, even though nothing is at the moment.

Watchable, if you can accept the possibility there is some ill tempered (but without any laser beams) indestructible minion coated monster lying somewhere on the ocean floor waiting to awaken.

Hustle and Flow - 2005

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0410097/

I realize this is a bit older movie, but I only watched it recently and have seen it a two or three times in the past few weeks.

I'm usually not into the gangsta rapper scene, but this movie I liked very much. Firstly it presents the ghetto and da hood decently, Howard's and Anderson's performances are very nice, the movie has some slick toons and the bitches are quite pleasant to the eye.

This movie is about some pimp who's rising from a mere pimp to a pimping rapper who fights with all he's got for his five minutes of fame. He finally get's the attention, but ends in the jail during the process.

I can honestly say, this is one of the rare motion pictures where you couldn't paint the ending happy nor sad. The movie just ends leaving you a notion that it may be worth watching it again.

Zero Effect - 1998

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120906/

An older motion picture that I find to be very underrated, a fact I can't quite understand as this movie has everything - good acting, a very solid storyline, interesting characters, a romance story that doesn't leave you in a puddle of your own puke after the movie has ended... The only thing that's "missing" is the happy ending. Not that it ends in a tragedy, but the couple doesn't ride into the sunset and that makes the movie look more everyday like especially with this type of complicated and fucked up characters. Complicated circumstances leave people inept at understanding the world arond them and I find this to be the true moral of the story the movie lays out.

All in all, good performances by Bill Pullman, Ben Stiller (who's movies I don't like, in this one he actually keeps a straight face; this and the Friends episode where he played Jennifer's psycho boyfriend) and charming Kim Dickens.

Oh yeah, very nice soundtrack as well.

Sleepy Hollow - 1999

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0162661/

I'm usually a big fan of both Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, but this movie I just didn't like and definitively can't see myself watching it again. I'm not a bit fairytale fan, but this is one boring movie.

The Hangover - 2009

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1119646/

This for me was a typical movie where I expect nothing, so it's quite impossible to be left disappointed. And when you actually consider this is one of the best comedies I've seen in a while, it's not that surprising.

This movie is about some guys who go to a sort of bachelor party to Las Vegas and due to abuse of alcohol and drugs get into dumb situations, but nothing you can't imagine yourself to be found in, provided enough dope and liquor. They get into a fight with Mike Tyson (who I guess is really desperate for money), steal a tiger, take part in gunfights with some gangs, cause various marital problems and a get involved in a missing person scenario (the groom, you guessed it).

The best part for me were the ending credits, where some photos pertaining to the night in question were shown so you got the chance to see what were those assholes actually doing... laughed my ass off.

Zombieland - 2009 (not a horror movie)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1156398/

Ah, finally something fresh. Admittedly not an "A class" production (or maybe it intentionally looks/feels like that?), a move that manages to deliver a lot. Fun, more fun, humor and some action, all wrapped up in a fun filled package. It even has an enjoyable love story, which in terms of zombie movies may seem out of place, but this movie is not about zombies. It's about people who have to deal with zombies, people who make up rules as they go and try to obey them.

A few very enjoyable casts, like Woody Harrelson on his holly quest to find the last box if Twinkies(TM) is ready to kill each and every zombie out there, even though later on you find he has much deeper motivation to do what he' doing. Also, Bill Murray who plays a man acting as a zombie (lol) did OK, even if only in a minor role.

Enjoyable soundtrack as well, merging nicely with the movie content. Some nice twists in the plot, a somewhat happy ending, but how can any ending be happy with billions of zombies roaming the world?

I absolutely recommend this movie, you should watch it.

Drag me to hell - 2009

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1127180/

Absolutely terrible, do not watch.

Moon - 2009

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1182345/

In desperate time for quality SF movies, I find this movie to be OK and even worth watching, maybe even recommendable. It kind of want's to be a 2001: A Space Odyssey look alike, but it fails to deliver a psychotic AI, however it does deliver on betrayal and you-cant-trust-anyone fronts.

It does lack pace and events, maybe they could have delivered more in less time, but the movie is worth watching for SF fans.

Terminator Salvation - 2009

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0438488/

I started watching this movie with extreme prejudice as a big Terminator and Terminator TJD fan (intentionally leaving out the third movie) and really expected nothing from, but the move delivered a lot from the original Terminator atmosphere. Like the point of robots being more sensible then them humans when it came to freedom of choice or their dedication to sacrifice their own "lives" for something they considered to be of greater importance.

Had it not been for some unneeded scenes and maybe some bad casts (I really found Bale to be out of character in this move the same goes for the guy playing the young Kyle Reese) I would *really* like this motion picture. Once again, it seems the happy ending movies are coming to their end finally, as this is yet another one that just an ends (and probably leaves room for a sequel).

Yea mate , Zombieland is nice , wathed it 2 times.

Also liked Moon , but as You say , one probable have to be SF fan to enjoy it fully. Very nicly played role by the main actor , and the base robot/computer also fit nicly.

Nothing to be sorry about, it's mostly stupid humor. If you still have it, try skipping to credits, if those photos don't make you laugh, nothing will.
