To DELL or not to DELL is the question
Posted by Chaos on November 14th, 2007, 05:59 PM

Every now and then we suffer from a weak mental moment and order items from an outfit such as Dell. Was it there old ad campaign playing with my sub conscience tell me "Dude you need a DELL" or was it because the deal they were promoting was just what I was looking for. In my case it seemed like the deal that i was looking for. Up until now the only dealing I have had with Dell (other than my first 20" widescreen LCD) were work related and their customer service seemed worthy of the reputation as good customer service. If we needed a part replaced it was usually delivered within 24-48 hrs, which is exceptable in most cases.

So on October 22 I was browsing Dell's website and landed on a page that offered an XBOX 360 with controller, headset, HDMI cable and 3 games including Halo 3 for $399. I have always steered away from consoles for one reason or another in the past but this deal really seemed to catch my interest. I picked up the phone and called a Dell salesperson. During the conversation i decided to go all out and get the HD DVD addon, a 12 month Gold Subscription to XBOX Live, and Dell 22" LCD screen to make my gaming experience the best I could for the money i was willing to spend. Once I finished the ordering I noticed that the XBOX package said 5-7 days for delivery which to me was exceptable even though I would have preferred that it ship ASAP.

The 24th of October the first item arrived which was only the subscription to the XBOX Live. On the 26th I got another package containing the HD DVD Drive but no monitor or XBOX 360. This is when things started to go wrong; I contacted Dell to determine when the monitor and XBOX were going to arrive. After several conversations both online and over the phoneI found out the monitor was in transit but the XBOX 360 was not currently available for shipping. Well that really sucked because I would not have purchased any of the other items if I had not seen the sale on the XBOX 360 package.

So anyway on the 27th of October the monitor arrived. The following Monday the 29th my phone rings and it's Dell customer service on the line to advise me that the monitor had shipped and it should be there in 2-3 days. WTF?? I asked the gentlemen on the phone if they had sent 2 monitors. His reply was "No" why do you ask, to this i replied that the monitor had arrived the previous Friday and wanted him to verify that a second unit was not shipped by mistake. No sir only 1 monitor has been shipped. Ok cool I said and the conversation ended with me shaking my head wondering how their service got so sloppy that they didnt even know that their item had been delivered days ago.

This was now 5-7 days from when the order was placed and I decided to get back in touch with Dell regarding the XBOX 360. At that time I was told it was back ordered and that it would ship on the 8th of November which pissed me off because I missed out on buying an 8800GT because I alloted my monies to the XBOX 360 purchase. So moving ahead to Nov 8th i was excited that my XBOX 360 had finally shipped and I should have it on the 12th or 13th of November. I also did some digging around with online Dell CSR's and got a weighbill for the Purolator shipment that contained the XBOX 360 so that I could follow the shipment through Purolator. When i entered the tracking information the Dell CSR provided me I got some disturbing results. It seemed according to this that the package was not shipped until the 10th of November from the Toronto sorting centre and had been delivered back to Dell on the 12th of November. I immediately got a Dell CSR online and inquired about the status. I was told that the package had been re routed and that it was in transit. This person was unaware that I had purolator tracking from a previous CSR and tried to smooth it over like it was a normal procedure. I thanked them and ended the online session and picked up the phone to speak to a LIVE CSR for clarification. I told him up front that I had purolator tracking info and for him to bring it up on his screen. I was so pissed off at this point that I wanted to vent on the poor Dell CSR but the first thing he said was I'm sorry sir but it looks like we screwed up and shipped the package to our mail room by mistake.

I have given Dell until today to get the XBOX 360 to my door or I am returning the entire order and getting the 8800GT that I should have got in the first place.

Thanks for reading my rant and consider this a warning if you think about shopping with Dell in the future.

Give me your thoughts on this so called customer service!

Well, I don’t think it is fair to blame the entire company just because some specific department sucks. I can feel your pain; I had the same experience with some others in the past. I think you should speak with their manager or some supervisor, and let them about this incident. Maybe it will help, but if the supervisor sucks as well, then you should cancel the order. They are not doing you any favor, I guess there are many places that would be more than happy to take you as customer and treat you better.

Dell is a price oriented company, but thats where the good news stop for the customer. Ive seen time and time again that Dell is not up to par on customer support, i worked several years in the business and dealing with Dell (and their hardware) was something i never liked, but had no choice since my customers bought these computers online and came to me because they could not send their computers to Dell to be repaired (Dell requires this for warranty issues) due to needing them on a daily basis (voiding their warranty). So if anything went bust that was specially manufactured by Dell like the mainboard and powersupply there was nothing i could do about it since these parts are in no way compliant with the ATX standard (cant buy the either). Bottom line is, Dell is popular due to their aggressive pricing, not their customer support (or serviceable products).

to bad for your waste of mone and time... i have a similar problem with my widescreen lcd it's in service from 17 octomber... and everytime i called them the say the same thing... i will be done soon. in the contract i have a agreement that says any kind of repair's or changes will be done in a period of maximum 30 days.. well i;l give them until moday and the i'l go to their main representance and ask for a refound because i'm sick of "sweet talk".

To bad that costumer service are sometimes.. a discrase.

Man I know all to well how much you were looking forward to receiving this and how frustrated you have become with the customer service at Dell. How in the hell does a company the size and structure of Dell support a shipping department that ships your console to there own mail room when you have already received product from them.

Here's where you file your grievance I did this with Cogeco cable after they mistakenly canceled my cable tv and internet the weekend before 9/11 because they lost 2 cheques one dating back almost 60 days and never notified me. I received rude service from customer service locally and at head office and finally told the supervisor to fuck off I am reporting you to the BBB. After I filed this complaint, and as I heard I am not the only one that did, the entire office here was restructured and yes some people were terminated here, and at head office including the rude supervisor.

Chaos- Sorry to hear that happened... I would be angry , very angry , ANNOYED at dell if that happend to me! They should have been upfront with the situation at the get go.....

Maybe it is a good idea to report them to the Better Business Buearu for that incident- but it probablywould be a waste of your time, no? (you know what i mean?)

I was looking at dell for a new computer for someone- but now i have some second thoughts , after reading your post... hummm - I should just build them a computer! ( sounds like a fun project! ) If I ever get to doing it, i hope to post up thread asking for all your suggestions!

Edward you touched on a good point and glad you brought it up. For Dell product you pay a premium price for midrange quality product. The reason you paid the premium price was for the customer service and financial terms as I did in 2002 and was quite happy with my "gamers package". In fact that tower with the original CPU and mobo intact is at work running smoothly.

About 2 years ago on my recommendation my mother called Dell as I indicated I was happy with the service and product from Dell. They were short with her and only interested in her financial information. Four times the guy tried to talk her into upgraded systems for gaming, etc .... the most system intensive game my mom plays is solitaire

SO .... after that I will not be recommending anyone to Dell and secondly Edward if you are considering buying a computer package this way avoid Blue Hippo as well its a scam.

Thank you for the reply, Mac Daddy.... I'll also say- my expereince with brand name computers (in chronological order: Proteva, Emachines, Acer and now Gateway) has been very good- I havent had any major problems with hardware failure.... Enough to contact customer support!....The proteva ( Cyrix , anyone lol ) is stil going strong , hardware wise- albeit win 95 .... Emachines is working very good - after falling and spiuing smoke LOL - Acer notebook, other than it getting overheated until I upgraded the BIOS and this Gateway - Makes wierd (Fan?) Noises once in a few whiles-(not 90% of the time) I havent had a really bad expereince with computers from name brands other than what i have mentioned above..... But i'll say this: the most reliable computer i have had has to be the emachines ! (proteva is very close, too!) I dont know about emachine build quality now, but back when i got it ( Athlon xp 2800+ 80GB HD era/days) it was very good, i suppose......

But now that I am thinking about it: Should i even build the computer for that person? ( being my brother- but i might also build one for my cousin, too!) I mean- Is it more reliable building it oneself? (as long as you use decent, reliable components?)- I would happily build a new comptuer for someone- it would be 'learning" expereince (lol) - but , on the other hand, i would sure have to hate supporting it adnaseum (if , at all, it ever came to that) with "issues" ......

Mac Daddy, or anyone: What is the best company to buy a computer from with DECENT Waranty and/or Tech support? Doesnt matter if from expereince or heard from a freind.... I'm guessing for that, i would have to pay premium- no? i think my brother is willing to spend up to 1.5 thou on his next rig..... And he wants it for URT 3 Boy, does he love that game (2004 variety )... so much , i'm thinking of getting him antoher, DIFFERENT game.... it is kind of annoying sometimes to hear the Tank shoot it's missles at night (he has a subwoofer) lol....

Thank you in advance

To put an end to this issue Dell called me today to say the XBOX360 would be here by Friday of this week but it had arrived last Friday. After a long conversation with the CSR they emailed me shipping labels and I am returning the entire order and they lost a sale of $1000 worth of hardware

Well wasn't the fault of the female rep as you mentioned but perhaps best to wash your hands of it ... your the customer and its there loss ....
